Rod Burnett trained as a sculptor, gaining a first class honours degree from Falmouth Art College in 1977. His degree show involved the construction of several large pieces in which tiny human figures played out simple scenes, animated by ingeniously complex machinery. Lodgings with the local Punch and Judy man gave Rod the idea of replacing the machinery with himself as animator, and Rod began to develop an interest in puppetry.

While lecturing at Exeter Art College, Rod worked with the community theatre group Fair Exchange. Rod then embarked on a solo career, and, in 1987, established Storybox Theatre.

Tanya Landman joined the company in 1992, and for several years Rod and Tanya performed together – touring to schools with Storybox Theatre, and to European festivals with Tantalus – a company set up to produce work for adult audiences.

The birth of two children in recent years has meant a return to solo touring for Rod. Tanya continues to administrate the company, and has also started writing. (Her first two novels for children - 100% Pig, and Waking Merlin - were published in 2005.)

The Steadfast Tin Soldier

The children were wide-eyed and open-mouthed at the story of the tin soldier with only one leg.
